The most amiable and notable of his qualities is his silent and unostentatious charityof a thoroughly cosmopolitan character. It is those who are relieved that alone know of it... But it is not in private alone that his charities are doled In all useful public works he lends a helping hand. In 1908 Babu Vihari Lala contributed a sum of Rs. 10,000 towards the cost of constructing a surgical ward for the Sambhu Nath Pundit Bospital at Bhowanipur. Next year he made a similar donation to the Lady Minto Nursing Association, besides paying an equal sum into the Government Treasury for any work of public utility and another sum of Bs, 1,000 to the Italian Earthquake Fund. But this is not by any means the sum total of his benefactions; for he is ever ready to contribute to local charities-to schools, dispensaries and distress funds. The name of Babu Vihari Lala is also well-known in the field of literature and as patron of letters. His " Prakriti Rahasya,” and "Bideshi Rahasya' are works which have been well-appreciated in many circles. They display a large fund of original humour and thoughtfulness which do him great credit. But his literary fame will rest more largely and permanently on his great work, “Yoga Washista” the translation of which from the original Sanskrit has cost him years of
