A wonder'ul story is related of this temple. It is said that the image of Madan Mohon, which is the image of Sree Krishna, installed in this temple, originally belonged to Maharajah Gopal Singh of Bishnupur in the District of Bankura, who pawned it to Sadhu Gokul for a lac of rupees. It is said that from the day Gokul came to the possession of the image, he began to prosper, while the Bishnupur Raj began to decline. However, an attempt was made by Maharajah Gopal Singh to get back the image, but Gokul was loath to part with it. Says Rajah Benoy Krishna in his “Early History of Calcutta':-"When, however, the Rajah wanted back the image, Gokul felt very much distressed, and was reluctant to part with the deity, and, in the meanwhile, the Bhishnupur Rajah was advised in a dream not to press the matter on Gokul, and so the Rajah desisted in demanding from Babu Gokul Chandra Mitra the return of the image."
