( li. ) happiness in this world and in the next. As dealing with a most abstruse and difficult subject, it requires no ordinary labour and scholarship to translate this work from the original Sanscrit into English. Baba Vihari Lala Mitra has achieved this difficult task with wonderful success. His translation of the “YogaWashista' is a monumental work of scholarship and learning. The four bulky volumes in which the translation is completed should find a place of honour in every Hindu Library. It is impossible to exaggerate the service which Babu Vihari Lala Mitra has tendered to the learned world in general, and to the Hindu public in particular by the translation of this ancient Sanscrit work. It may be mentioned, by thė way, that the late Mataji Maharani Tapaswini of the Mahakali Patshala considered the “Yoga-Vashista” as one of the greatest works on Hindu philosophy, and that she made a point of reading and explaining a portion of this book daily to her Hindu disciples and friends. It is only by means of Yoga that the human soul may attain complete union with the Supreme Soul and the “Yoga Vashista" teaches this process. Our admiration of Babu Vihari Lala Mitra began from the moment we commenced reading his English translation of the “Yoga Washista' some seventeen years ago. For this book, if for nothing else, he is entitled to the warmest gratitude of his Hindu country men. It is of course apparent that Babu Vihari Lala Mitra had to spend a considerable sum in translating and publishing this work. ll 4
