(i.) Besides this remarkable work, Babu Vihari Lafa Mitra is the author of several thoughtful Bengali books, the “Mitra Rahashya,” the Bideshi Rahashya” and the “Prakriti Rahashya.” These books deal with religious, moral, social and industrial subjects, and are full of instruction and wisdom. Wit and humour find a graceful expression in some of the dialogues. The chief merit of these books is the deep feeling of loyalty which pervades their pages. Babu Vihari Lala Mitra is himself a man of peace, and he lays the greatest stress on the fact that, without peace and order, there cannot be the smallest progress in religion, ethics, industry or in any other, department of social and public life. Allegiance to the Sovereign is the key note of his politics. He is a Moderate of Moderates. His views on social questions are of an advanced character. He is a strong advocate of female education, and his views on this subject are expressed in an inimitably simple style in his “Prakriti Rahashya..' We quote one passage :- "It is said that Government is going to make arrangements for free primary education. It will no. doubt confer incalculable blessings upon the country. It is my earnest prayer that girls' schools should also be made free, if such an arrangement has not already been coutemplated in the scheme. At least fiveeighths of the money, proposed to be devoted to free primary education, should be laid aside for the editcation of girls, for the women are the real workers, and from their work will spring progress and pro
