His public benefactions have not been inconsiderable, while with his private charities they would amount to a lakh and more. Among other donations, within the last three years he has paid Rs. 10,000, for the surgical ward of Pundit Sumbhoo Nath Hospital in Bhowanipur, Rs. 10,000 to the funds of the Lady Minto Nursing Association, Rs. 10,000 to the Government of Bengal for any act of public utility, and Rs. 1,000 to the Italian Earthquake Fund. His loyalty is undoubted and has been demonstrated so practioally as to require no words of commendation at our hands. Simple, austere, unostentatious in his life and habits, he is a veritable recluse, who does good in privacy and silence, not caring to mix with the throng whose be-all-and-end all in existence seems to be giving as much publicity to themselves and their doings as possible, and thereby to arrest the attention of the authorities. It is curious in a sense that Government has not given any tangible proof of its having realised the greatness of this silent worker in the field of benevolence and charity, loyalty and literature, who acts up to that well-known Christian maxim-let not thy left hand know what thy right giveth.
