The following letter was addressed by the Chief Secretary to the Governtment of Bengal to the Commissioner of the Presidency Division :- "I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 7 dated the 10th April 1911, in which you report that Babu Behari Lall Mittra, of Pathuriaghata, Calcutta, recently forwarded a cheque for Rs. 25,000 as the first instalment of the donation of Rs. 75,000 already. offered by him to the building fund of the 'Refuge' at present located in No. 125, Bowbazar Street, and that the cheque has been made over to Mr. A. M. Biswas, Superintendent of that institution. “2. I am to request that you will be so good as to convey to Babu Behari Lall Mittra an expression of His Honour the Lieutenant Governor's high appeciation of his liberality and public spirit.' And this letter has been published in the Calcutta. Gaeette for "general information.' The name of Babu Vihari Lala Mitra is not unknown to the reader. He is one of the few great souls who do not care for the plaudits of the populace. With vast wealth at his command, with blue blood in his veins, with advantages and opportunities, born of rank and position, he is almost a recluse, doing what good he can to fellow-men in a broad catholicity of spirit but in silence.
