But the morning papers which, among the members of the press, can command space for the purpose do not do so, while the vernacular papers follow suit. We do not believe this to be just the right thing to do. Of course, so great has been the demoralization of the Indians that in many casses, manifestation of public spirit is born of a desire, more selfish than humanitarian or patriotic. Indeed, there is an impression abroad that every title or honor has its set value in the shape of donation to public institutions. There can be no denying that there are amongst us people who only open their purse-strings for the gratification of personal ambition. We can certainly have no respect for sueh characters. The fountain of public beneficence springs from a nobleness of heart, a breadth of views, a forgetfulness of self which deserve to be chronicled in letters of rold. We freely admit that this is not what we alwavs find in the acts of charity which are advertised in a manner so as to betray- something other than the qualities mentioned above, All the same we stoutly deny that either the springs of charity and beneficence have dried up its Bengal or that it is only motives of self-aggrandisement which induce our countrymen to come forward publicly to help charities or public institutions.
