ভূমিকা
‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’ মধুসূদনের সর্ব্বশ্রেষ্ঠ কবিকীর্ত্তি। তাঁহার আর কোনও রচনা যদি উত্তরকাল পর্য্যন্ত না পৌঁছিত, তাহা হইলেও শুধু এই একখানি কাব্যের সাহায্যে তিনি অমরতা লাভ করিতেন।
এই কাব্য রচনা ও প্রকাশের কোনও বিস্তৃত ধারাবাহিক বিবরণ পাওয়া যায় না; মধুসূদনের চিঠিপত্র হইতে যে খবর পাওয়া যায়, তাহা এই।—
১৮৬০ খ্রীষ্টাব্দের ২৪ এপ্রিল ৬ নং লোয়ার চীৎপুর রোড হইতে বন্ধু রাজনারায়ণ বসুকে মধুসূদন লিখিয়াছিলেন—
The subject you propose for a national epic [সিংহল বিজয়] is good—very good indeed. But I don’t think I have as yet acquired a sufficient mastery over the “Art of poetry” to do it justice. So you must wait a few years more. In the meantime, I am going to celebrate the death of my favourite Indrajit. Do not be frightened my dear fellow, I won't trouble my readors with vira ras (বীরবস). Let me write a few EpicWin lings and thus noquire a pucca fist....
I enclose the opening invocation of my “মেঘনাদ"—you must tell me what you think of it. A friend here, a good judge of poetry has pronounced it magnificent.—‘জীবন-চরিত', পৃ. ৩১১-১৩, ৩১৬।
‘তিলোত্তমাসম্ভব কাব্যে’র রচনা তখন শেষ হইয়াছে, কিন্তু পুস্তক মুদ্রিত হইয়া প্রকাশিত হয় নাই। মে মাসে উহা প্রকাশিত হয়। মধুসূদন যে পরীক্ষার ছলে ‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’ আরম্ভ করিয়াছিলেন, উপরের পত্রাংশে তাহার আভাস আছে।
ঐ বৎসরের ১৫ মে তারিখে রাজনারায়ণকে লেখা মধুসূদনের একটি পত্রে আমরা দেখিতে পাই—
