“ভূমিকা” চতুর্থ সংস্করণ হইতেই বাহির হইতে থাকে।[১] ষষ্ঠ সংস্করণে সম্পূর্ণ কাব্যখানি দুই খণ্ড একত্রে (পৃ. ৩২০) ১৮৬৯ খ্রীষ্টাব্দের ২০ জুলাই প্রকাশিত হয়। মধুসূদনের জীবিতকালে আর কোনও সংস্করণ হইয়াছিল বলিয়া আমাদের জানা নাই। আমরা বর্ত্তমান গ্রন্থাবলীতে এই সংস্করণের পাঠই গ্রহণ করিয়াছি।
তৃতীয় সংস্করণ হইতে মধুসূদন এই গ্রন্থের “মঙ্গলাচরণ” বা উৎসর্গপত্রটি বর্জ্জন করেন। ইউরোপে অবস্থানকালে তিনি দিগম্বর মিত্রের নিকট হইতে যে ব্যবহার প্রাপ্ত হইয়াছিলেন, তাহার ফলেই এইরূপ হইয়া থাকিবে। ‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’ ও অমিত্রাক্ষর ছন্দ সম্পর্কে মধুসূদনের পত্রাবলীতে অনেক জ্ঞাতব্য ও কৌতূহলপ্রদ সংবাদ আছে। আমরা ‘জীবন-চরিত’ (৪র্থ সং) হইতে সেগুলি সংগ্রহ করিয়া নিম্নে একত্র সন্নিবিষ্ট করিতেছি—

...you know I am “amit with the love of sacred song.” There never was a fellow more madly after the Muses than your poor friend! Night and day I am at there. So you must not lay aside Meghannd. If you do, I shall begin to rave. ‘The Muses before everything’ is my motto! It won't cost you more than a couple of nights to get over it. I am anxious that the work should be finished by the end of the year, and I am anxious to know how far I have succeeded in getting into the true heroic style. Besides, my position, as a tremendous literary rebel, demands the consolation and the encouraging sympathy of friendship. I have thrown down the gauntlet, and proudly denounced those, whom our countrymen have worshipped for years, as impostors, and unworthy of the honours heaped upon them! I ought to rise higher with each poem. If you think the Meghanad destitute of merit, why! I shall burn it without & sigh of regret.—পৃ. ৩২৩।
- ↑ ‘মধু-স্মৃতি’তে (পৃ. ১৭৮) নগেন্দ্রবাবু লিখিয়াছেন, “তৃতীয় সংস্করণে হেমচন্দ্র উপরিউক্ত সমালোচনা পরিবর্ত্তিত করিয়া প্রকাশ করেন।” ইহা যে ভুল, তাহা এই ভূমিকার তারিখ ও তৃতীয় সংস্করণের প্রকাশন কাল দেখিলেই বুঝা যায়।
