আদি হিন্দুযুগ। }(tన মূৰ্ত্তিতে, মামুষের কাঠামে স্থল গঠনে দেবতা গড়িয়াছিল। পাশ্চাত্য শিল্পীও এ কথা স্বীকার করিয়াছেন। * বাস্তবিকই যশোরেশ্বরীর মূৰ্ত্তি ভীষণ হইলেও ইহা যে ভাস্কর্ঘ্যের একটি চরম আদর্শ তাঁহাতে সন্দেহ নাই। কেহ কেহ বলেন সম্বলপুরে সম্বলেশ্বরীর মন্দিরে শনির মূৰ্ত্তি ব্যতীত মানুষের মূৰ্ত্তিতে এমন ভীষণ ভাব আর কোথাও ফলান হয় নাই। উড়িষ্যার অন্তর্গত যাজপুরে বৈতরণী তীরে সপ্ত মাতৃকার মূৰ্ত্তিমধ্যে চামুণ্ডা মাতার মূৰ্ত্তিও এইরূপ ভয়ঙ্করী। তাছাও এ জাতীয় মূৰ্ত্তিশিল্পের পরাকাষ্ঠীরূপে বর্ণিত হইয়াছে। ঃ যশোরেশ্বরী মূৰ্ত্তির গঠনশক্তি কেবল মাত্র মুখমণ্ডলেই প্রদর্শিত হইয়াছে। এ মূৰ্ত্তির কণ্ঠের নিম্নে হস্তপদ বা নিম্নাঙ্গ কিছুই নাই। উহা একখানি প্রস্তরপিণ্ড মাত্র। ইহার কষ্টিপাথরের কৃষ্ণতমু যে কত বৃহৎ বা ভারী, তাহা বুঝা যায় না। প্রথমতঃ একটা সমচতুষ্কোণ প্রস্তরময় বেদী প্রায় ১ হাত উচ্চ। তাহা হইতে কৃষ্ণ প্রস্তরের একটা আবরণ ক্রমশঃ সরু হইয়া কণ্ঠ পর্যন্ত আসিয়া মুখমণ্ডলের সহিত সুন্দরভাবে মিলিয়াছে। এটি প্রকৃত আবরণ কিনা তাহাও সন্দেহের বিষয়। আবরণ হইলে, উহার নিম্নে কোন হস্ত পদাদির চিহ্ন আছে কিনা জানিবার উপায় নাই। থাকিলেও তাহা মুখমণ্ডলের অনুযায়ী পরিমাণবিশিষ্ট নহে ; যদি সেরূপ পরিমিতই হয়, তাহ হইলে “Greek and Italian art would bring the gods to earth, and make them the most beautiful of men; Indian art raises men up to heaven and makes them even as the gods.” Havell's Indian Sculpture and Painting p. 83. t"A people, superstitious like the Hindus, were no less influenced by one of the best specimens of Hindoo Sculpture in the frightful image of Jashareswari.
