unfavorably with Macaulay's History of England or Green's History of the English People or Hunter's Ruler's Series which the best boys that go in for the Entrance Examination study and master, and from which they receive taste for historical studies. It need not be stated that text-books on history form a portion of the literatye of the pupils attending our schools. If then the knowledge of historical facts be communicated through Bengali, they will have less literature, less humanising instruction and the disproportion between the amount of positive information and the low degree of culture will be greater than what it is at present. No history of England written in Bengali will convey to the minds of our pupils an adequate idea of the constitution of Great Britain and Ireland as the standard works in English on the same subject will do. The study of history through the medium of English is calculated to strengthen the knowledge of English on the part of our boys, in as much as it keeps them in touch with the works of Freeman and Froude. It will also enable them to seize the spirit and power of English literature more than the study of similar works in Bengali. No historical work written in Bengali will enable the boys to understand the allusions implied in the expressions 'All is lost, save honour', 'Had I but served my God with half the zeal with which I served my prince, He would not have given me up in my gray hairs, When Adam delved and Eve span, where was then the gentleman?' 'sense of honour, 'a bill of attainder', 'Thirty-nine Articles of Faith,' Peter's pence,' 'impeachment,' 'Chivalry' &c. I am also not in favour of placing the teaching of geography in the upper classes of our schools on a vernacular basis, for in that case the boys will not be able to pronounce the names of places properly. Physical Geography and Science may be taught through the medium of Bengali. In my humble opinion Bengali might form a part of the programme of studies for the F.A. and B.A. examinations. Its instruction would be of immense benefit to the students with aptitudes for literary or philosophical studies.
