SIR, I beg to acknowledge receipt of your Circular letter, dated the 5th January 1895, and to submit my views with reference to the questions you have been pleased to favour me with. As regards the first question I am humbly of opinion that vernacular languages should not be made the medium of instruction up to the Entraace Examination of the Calcutta University in History, Geography and Mathematics. Nor I am for restricting the proposal up to the fourth class of Entrance Schools. For the High English Schools that have worked on vernacular basis have been hitherto sad failures. But I may be permitted to observe here by the way that up to the fourth class boys should be made first to explain everything in their own vernacular languages, and then do that into English. As for the second question I am in favour of making the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, but in that case the Sanskrit text-books should be reduced in number, otherwise the boys would fare very badly having too many irons in the fire, Yours faithfully, DwARKA NATH BASU, Head Master, Rungpur Zillah School, I9 From A.
