( 35 ) he proposal to make the vernacular languages the medium of instruction up to the Entrance Examination in History, Geography and Mathematics, In my opinion the knowledge of English now acquired by students before matriculation is generally inadequate considering that all their studies at the University have to be carried on in that language, and any change which would tend in any way to diminish that knowledge would, I consider, be undesirable. As regards the proposal to make the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F. A. and B. A. Examinations, while fully recognizing the advantage of a thorough acquaintance with these languages, I think that considering the number of dif ferent subjects already included in the University curriculum it is hardly desirable to add thereto by requiring pass students to take up the verna eukar languages. I have the honor to be SRs, Your most obedient Servant A. C. EDWARDS, 2O From BABU RATANMONT GUPTA Headmaster, Dacca Collegiate School, TTO The Principal, Dacca College. Dated, Dacca, the 17th January 1895 SIR, I have the honour to request the favour of your forwarding my views on the questions raised by the Bengal Academy of Literature, who have also separately addressed you on the subject. History is very useful for the boys to learn the English language with great facility, making them familiar with the different forms of Construction, as well as words and phrases in the language they come across in the course of their studies, and enabling them thereby to get some insight into
