SIR, In reference to your Committee's Circular letter of the 5th Instant, anent the two questions taken up by the Parishad in connection with the School and College curricula, I have the honour briefly to state my views in regard to them. As to the first question, I quite concur in the importance of the change proposed by the Parisad up to the standard of the Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University. It may be observed here that from the number of subjects and the necessarily limited time that our little children have, to learn them in a foreign tongue, the result is generally a mere superficial acquaintance on their part with several, instead of a thorough grasp of one or two great subjects. I would fain believe that, were provision made in the University course for their study in their own vernaculars, of such minor subjects as those mentioned by the Parishad, they might have at their disposal ample time to devote to the cultivation of English literature, which is in my humble opinion, quite in keeping with their taste and requirements. It is but superfluous to add that under the present regime they are constrained to trust more to memory than to sense, which is not a happy augury for their future improvement. 3. With regard to the second question, it occurs to me that the plan of setting at the F.A. and B. A. Examinations of the Calcutta University, a paper on Composition in and Translation into vernaculars is well cal
