( 45 ) culated to stimulate our young men to read such vernacular books as are extant and, what is better, to add to the stock of literature of the country by their own productions. I need scarcely say that the study of vernacular languages on their part ceasing with the Entrance Examination or, more properly speaking, with the Middle Scholarship ones, they generally fail to express themselves correctly enough in those languages, and that this defect can, in my humble opinion, be removed only by adoption of the plan in question. DEAR SIRS, With reference to your printed Circular dated the 5th January 1895, I have the honour to reply as follows :- (I) As at present advised, I am not prepared to state that I approve of the proposal to make the vernacular languages the medium of instruction up to the Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University in the following subjects, viz. History, Geography and Mathematics. At the same time I am so impressed with the necessity of imparting a scholarly knowledge of the vernaculars to every educated native of India that (2) I strongly approve of the proposal to make the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F.
