( 8 r ) i From H. M. PERCI v AL ESQUIRE, M. A. TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE BANGYA SAHITYA PARISHAD. Dated I9th January 1895. SRS, In reply to your circular of 5th instant, I beg to say that:- I. I do not approve of the proposal to examine for any subject in the Vernacular in the Entrance Examination in so far as it is a test for admission into a course of university as college studies, the medium of conducting test in which and of imparting instruction for which is English. But so far as the entrance is a final test of school instruction, after tassing which a candidate does not intend to prosecute a caurse of collegiate studies, I approve of the proposal. But I wish to add that it is a question requiring further consideration whether it is not desirable to institute a separate examination by a recognised body, for this second purpose (of a final test) that the entrance has hitherto served, in addition to its proper primary purpose. As for confining the proposal up to the middle standard, I agree, provided there is time enough between the middle examination and the entrance for a boy to acquire a sufficient knowledge of English so as to be able to answer all the papers in all subjects at the Entrance in English, and presumably to follow lectures delivered in that language in all subjects in the F. A. classes. 2. I approve of the proposal to introduce vernacular into the F. A. and B. A. in addition to, not in substitution of, a classical language. The question that arises upon this via whether the present courses of studies for the F. A. and B. A. will admit of any such addition, is one no dout which the Parishad will consider in due course. Allow me to add that I think the B. A. course most certainly admits of the addition. I am sirs, Yours faithfully H. M. PERcIv AL
