DEAR SRS, With reference to your circular letter dated the 5th of January 1895, I beg to offer the following remarks. As regards the introduction of vernacular text-books in History, Geography and Mathematics, I am of opinion that in the higher classes, boys should be in touch with original writings on those subjects, specially History and Geography. The existing English text-books on those subjects, though not original works, fairly convey the spirit of such works. The vernacular languages are still poor in that respect, And I do not think the poverty can be remedied, till original works are written in the vernacular languages. But I think a trial may be given for the introduction of vernacular text-book in history and Geography up to the fourth class. As for Mathematics, there can not be much objection to the introduction of vernacular text-books even in the highest classes, provided that the boys be taught the technical English words at the same time. For the present however, I should think, that English text-books be retained in Geometry. I do not think we have yet got a Bengali literature, that can take the place side by side with the classical vernaculars in F. A. and B. A. Examinations. On principle also I object to such a course being adopted, as the work of assimilating the thoughts Conveyed in Sanscrit is stil very, very incomplete.
