( 97 ) humble opinion, History, Geography and Mathematics may be taught advantageously through the medium of the vernacular languages. For the present, this change may be introduced up to the standard of Middle English Examination, i.e., to the 4th class of Entrance Schools. When this measure is attended with success, as it is earnestly hoped it would be, it may be gradually extended up to the Entrance Standard. 2. Vernacular languages may be taken up in the F. A., or B. A., Examinations in addition to Sanskrit, Arabic, provided the classical languages do not run the risk of being altogether neglected. SHR, On receipt of your circular letter dated the 5th of January 1895 through a member of your Academy, I have the honour to record my observations as follows :- I. As for schools in Bengal are concerned, the scheme can be successfully worked out in all its details. But I do not like that the proposal should be restricted up to the 4th class for the little Bengalee, that the boys will learn in the first five years of their school-life, will be wholly forgotten in the next three years and so one of the prime objects of the proposal, namely the cultivation of Bengalee Language and literature and the consequent lessening of pressure, will be defeated. If the scheme is to do any good at all it must not be stopped in the middle when it has got a good start but must be carried up to the end of school-life. 2. But as far as schools in Behar are concerned two difficulties present themseives to me which, to my thinking, is very difficult to get rid of.
