( 'rer ) BABU SY AM LAL DUTT, 站 Head Master, Jessore. The 25th January 1895. DEAR SIR, In reply to your circular letter dated the 5th instant I beg to state as follows :- I. I fully approve of your proposal to teach Entrance candidates History, Geography and Mathematics in their own vernacular. I would be glad if for the F. A., and B. A. Examinations History, Philosophy and Science were taught in the Vernaculars or in some Indian Vernacular say Hindi. No nation can be efficiently taught their subjects except in their own vernacular. 2. Secondly I do not approve of the proposal to add Indian Vernaculars to the classical second languages. May I request the favor of your moving the University to give early effect to the rule that candidates would have to write answers in the Dev Nagar character. This would do much good to us. For when our country men learn to read and write Deb-Nagar we can print Bengali Books and Books in the other Languages in India in Dev-Nagar and so may have in time only one alphabet used throughout the continent of India as the Roman character is used throughout Europe. Yours faithfully, SYAM LAL DATTA. Head Master, Jessore Zilla School From BABU SASI BHUSAN SEN M. A., Lecturer, Dacca College. THE HON'BLE JUSTICE GURUDAS BANNERJI, MI. A. D. L. BABU RABINDRA NATH TAGORE, PANDIT RAJANI KANT GUPTA, N. K. BOSE ESQ., M. A. C. S., BABU HIRENDRA NATH DATTA. Dated Dacca College, the 29th January 1895. TO SRs, In reference to the two questions which you have done me the honour to ask my opinion about-I beg leave to make the following observations. If the Calcutta University allowed examinations in Bengali on History, Mathematics, and Geography, the student would find it some what easier to get up those subjects, and some addition would take place to the existing vernacular literature through publication of Historica, Geographical and
