A., Registrar, Calcutta, University, Dated Calcutta, thy 25th September, 1895. SIR, As President of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, and also as a fellow of the Calcutta Uuiversity I beg to request the favour of your submitting this letter for the considertion of the Syndicate at its next meeting. 2. I beg in the first place, to state for the information of the Syndicate, that the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad is a literary society which has for its object the improvement of the Bengali language and literature, and that it now counts as its members the gentlemen named in the list here with annexed and marked as appendix A. 3. I should next state, that the question of recognizing the Wernacular languages in the Examinations of the Calcutta University was discussed by the Parishad last year, and was referred to a Sub-Committee consisting of Babu Rabindra Nath Tagore, the Hon'ble Justice Gooroo Dluss Banerjee, Mr. Nauda Krishna Bose, Babu Rajani Kanta Gupta, dnd Bbu Hirendra Nath Datta. I annex a copy of the Snb-Committees report marked as App.cndix B. recommending ;- (I.) That the University be moved to adopt a regulation to the effect that at the F. A. Examination and in the A. Course of the B. A. Examination where a classical language is taken as the third subject, one paper should be set containing-(i) passages in English for translation into one of the vernaculars of India, recognized by the Senate, and -(ii) a subject for original composition in one of the said vernaculars, text-books being recommended as models of style,
