134 on every side. Each successive tower was smaller than the one directly below it. The whole building was six hundred feet high. The ascent from tower to tower was by winding stairs on the outside of the building. On the top was an observatory, where the priests, who were the learned men of the empire, studied the courses and changes of the heaverly bodies. This gave the Chaldeans great advaitages in viewing the stars and planets, and they began early to study astronomy. Their as tronomical observations extend back to the fifteenth year after the building of the tower of Babel. In the temple were many large rooms, with arched roofs, supported by pillars. Most of the furniture of these rooms, such as tables, censers, cups, &c. were of gold, and there were several large images of gold. One of these statues was immensely large, and was, perhaps, the one that Nebuchadnezzar set up in the plain of Dura. The sacred vessels from the temple at Jerusalem were placed in ..some & these towers. The gold in this temple was worth 186 millions, or nearly 20 crores of rupees.
