At the close of king Josiah’s reign, his army was subdued by Pharoah Necho, king of Egypt, and the country of Judah became a province of Egypt. During theoreign of Jehoiakim in Judah, the Egyptian king went to war against the king of Babylon. As Nab opola'ssar was old and infirm, he gave the command of his armies to Nebuchadnezzar, his son, who marched against the Egyptian army and defeated them. He then went to Jerusalem and besieged it, and conquered the whole country of Judañ. He, however, allowed Jehoiakim to remaïn king, under the control of the king of Babylon. He robbed the temple of part of its furniture, and carried back with him several young men who were descended from the royal family of Jugah, to be employed in the court of Babylon.
