288 who, like us, live in a free country, where the innocent are protected from injury. Darius was much affected by the ‘miraculous escape of Daniel. In imitation of Nebuchadnezzar, he wrote the following proclamation to all the people in the empire ; beginning, as is usual in the east, with a salutation. (Ch. vi. 25, 26.) • “King Darius, unto all people, nations and languages, that dwell in all the earth ; peace be multiplied unto you ! I make a decree, that in every dominion of my kingdom, men fear and tremble before the Godofpaniel; for he is the living God, and teadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his doաiոiջո siia'i be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescu eth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth ; and he hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.” Daniel was, from this time, so much beloved by the king and people, that no person dared to bring any accușațion against him. All his dignities were restored, and the remainder of his life was speut in peace and prosperity.
