68 CHAPTER IV. i Jerusalem destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. A Little after the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream, Jehoiakim, king of Judah, revolted from the king of Babylon, and made an alliance with Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar was then too much occupied with the affairs of his kingdom to march against Jehoiakim ; but he sent to the governors of all his western provinces, commanding them to fight against Judah, and distress the inhabitants as much as possible. For three years a warfare was carried on against the tribe of Judah by the Ammonites, Moabites, Syrians, and Arabians. The inhabitants of Jerusalem were shut up in the city, which was surrounded by enemies from all quarters. During this period Jehoiakim died, and was succeeded by his son Jehoiachin. At the end of three years, Nebuchadnezzar came himself with his army, and took possession of the city. He robbed the temple and palaces at Jeru
