(lixli) Indian mind would do well to read the English translation of Rai Vihari Lal Mitra's Chinta Rahaya. Witness how the writer proves his abstruse dictum that the foundation of all opinions is one. "A certain monarch," the writer says, “asked his Prime Minister, 'can you tell me, where unanimtly of opinion exists?” The minister blandly answered, "Amongst men of . culture and erudition.” In order to prove his assertion, the Minister suggested that a royal proclamatin be issued calling upon all stages of the realm to pour a pailful of milk on a certain night in a pond near the cremation ground as a ritual of intercession with the gods on behalf of the monarch who desired a son and . heir. The philosophers expressed their willingņess to obey the royal command, but each of them went away thinking that if he poured in a pailful of water instead of milk into the pond, it would not be noticed in the large quantity of milk which others would throw into the pond. The morning following the ceremony, the monarch found there was not a trace of milk in the pond; each of the philosophers had poured in water instead of milk thinking the others would furnish the milk.” This is ope among many of the stories recorded by the Rai Bahadur. It shows like the rest, how the Indian mind delights in metaphysical riddles. 18
