( 92 ) answer the questions on these subjects in their own vernacular although they inay have studied them from the English Text books set upon these subjects. I fully feel the force of the objection against the proposed rule, that it may tend to make the knowledge in English of the succesful candidates more imperfect than it is now. To meet this objection I would raise the pass marks in English and would assign separate marks in English Transta tion and fix a pass marks on this subject alone making it sufficiently high. The reasons which weigh with me in forming this opinion are, amongst others, 1st it would encourage the cultivation of vernacular literature, 2nd diminish cramming aid 3rd thereby it would secure a better training of the thinking faculty. These benifits in my opinion outweigh the disadvantages generally urged against the suggested rule. In the F. A. and B. A. Examinations I would not make the study of text books in vernacular as compulsory but would pass a rule to the effect that it would be left to the option of a candidate to write an essay in his own vernacular on a subject to be set by the examiner in the classical languages, and if he exercises this option, the marks obtained by him should be taken into account in the aggregate pass marks. Such a rule as this would encourage cultivation of vernacular literature. RoMESH CHANDRA MITTRA 2o Januarry 1895. TO BABU ROBINDRA NATHI TAGORE. HON'BLE GOOROODAS BANER J I. &c. &c.
